Lenti Virus

Gene therapy by lentiviral vectors is a method in which genes can be modified, deleted, or inserted in organisms by using those lentiviruses.

The name comes from the Latin language: lente is slowly. Also called slow viruses. They belong to the family of retroviruses, causing disease symptoms occurring only after a long period of latency. An example of such a virus is human immunodeficiency virus - HIV.

During the latent period, lentiviruses go through a lysogenic cycle, integrating their RNA or DNA from the DNA or RNA of the affected organism. The affected cell is then stimulated by the virus to intensify sharing, which duplicates the genetic information of the virus. After a certain period of multiplication, the virus becomes active, causing symptoms.
